microRNA (miRNA) is a class of endogenous non-coding Rnas with regulatory functions, with a length of about 22nt. So far, mirnas have been found to exist widely in the genomes of animals, plants, fungi and viruses. Most mirnas exist in the genome in the form of single copy, multiple copy or gene clusters, and play a very important role in regulating the expression of genes related to the growth and development of organisms and the occurrence of diseases.
It is predicted that each miRNA may have dozens or hundreds of target genes, but at present we do not know how many of the predicted genes are correct and how well they are regulated by mirnas. Generally speaking, miRNA regulates target genes at the post-transcriptional level, regulating the expression of target genes through mechanisms such as target gene degradation or translation inhibition. When miRNA and target mRNA are completely complementary (or almost completely complementary), the degradation of target mRNA is often caused. The incomplete complementarity of miRNA and target gene mRNA can cause miRNA to inhibit the expression of target gene at the protein translation level. With the continuous discovery of specific mirnas and the validation of target genes in some disease pathways, new therapeutic approaches may be found.
